Naschmarkt, Fleemarkt, and free city bikes

September 17, 2011

Holy cow. I don't think I've ever seen so many people, or so much junk in the same place.
We went to the Naschmarkt and Fleemarkt this morning at Kettenbrücke.
It was just like a regular flee market, except they had a section where people could sell all their old nasty things, like a yard sale but dirtier. And instead of paying like 10 cents like a regular yard sale, you were paying like 7 euro! It was insane! I couldn't believe how many people were buying things like used shoes, clothes and dishes! Okay, the dishes weren't so bad, but they weren't pretty Viennese dishes either. As for me, I bargained for a few things (which I got at a price I was willing to pay, but I'm sure I still paid three times what the items were worth...) including a wallet, a Barcelona soccer jersey and a few other things I can't mention in case the recipients are reading ;)
After the Naschmarkt, we went to McDonalds to access their free wifi. I took pictures, because I cannot believe the McDonalds here. They're like cafes! Very clean, modern areas... I guess I don't really remember the McDonalds at home because I never go into them, but I do remember they're not like this:

I made sure to take pictures with the menu, so you would believe me...

We met up with Brother Minert at two to figure out the free city bike system. After a failed attempt at one bike station, we found one that worked and started around the city.
One thing here in Vienna, is that bikes are treated like vehicles. That means they ride on the road, cars can cut you off, run you off the side of the road, and almost hit you. After falling off my bike a few times, and experiencing the other joys of biking in Vienna, I can knowingly say that it it MUCH easier to ride in the U.S. and I probably won't be trying the bike system again anytime soon...
We actually went back to GriechenStraße today to take pictures. Well, I really wanted to go back to take pictures, so the rest of the girls humored me :) It is still just as gorgeous as I left it two days ago!
I'm positive that will be one of my most visited spots...
